Taps with washers

There are 2 types of tap systems that are used in tap manufacturing,

The 1^st type is washer taps which work on a plunger type set up when you turn the tap the washer that is connected to a spindle lifts up and lets the water through and vice versa when you turn the tap the other way the spindle goes down and the rubber washer seals the hole and shuts the water off. when theses washers wear out it can leave you with taps that wont shut down properly and leave you with dripping taps. these type off taps are relatively easy to fix and service as long as they aren’t totally seized on to the tap body itself.

Tap cartridges

The 2^nd Type are lever taps which use cartridges that are a sealed unit system, these cartridges work 2 x circular ceramic disks that have holes in them, the 1^st disk has hole at 12 o’clock and six o’clock, the 2^nd disk has holes at 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock, so as you turn the tap lever, one of the disks turn so the holes match up and TAH DAH the water comes through.

These kind of lever taps are not so maintenance friendly and will have to have new cartridges fitted if they start to drip, or wont turn off, as the disks have worn out.

In some cases, when problems do arise with this tap system it is easier and cheaper to simply Replace the tap itself, the reason for this is that there are many tap manufacturers out there and they use different size and types of cartridges, some are cheap and some are expensive depending on who made the tap? Some you can buy over the counter and some you have to order in from the manufacturer
